Encouraging Graduates Makes a Difference!

With graduation right around the corner, I can't help but feel a sense of joy and excitement for all of those who are embarking on their next level of success in life. Graduation is such a monumental achievement for anyone but especially for the students who have overcome.

Despite rising national graduation rates, low-income and minority students continue to lag behind their peers in finishing high school. While the national graduation rate for the year 2016 was 83%, it was only 75% for black students and 78% for hispanic students. Civic Enterprises and the Everyone Graduates Center at the Johns Hopkins University.

However, these students should not be taken lightly. They are catching up faster than their peers with a great sense of determination and grit that is incomparable. Graduation rates have increased by 8% for black students and 7% for Latino students since 2011, compared to 3% for white students.

These disparities don't stop after high school graduation. In my previous post, Motivated Mom Movement, you can see that there is a huge disparity amongst the graduation rate of young parents in college. And while 60% of the wealthiest students complete their studies and graduate, only about 14% of low-income college students graduate, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

Graduation is a once in a lifetime event for the graduate, but has a story of fortitude, resilience, and grit that should be celebrated! Whether you or your loved one is the first in your family to graduate, or come from a long line of graduates, graduation is a time to reflect on how cycles of praise, affirmation, and celebration built strength across generations. We must continue celebrations from one generation to the next to create a family and community history of resilience and accomplishment.

Therefore, this graduation season, I encourage you all to celebrate these remarkable accomplishments through stories that show values of determination and ambition across the generations, values that build strength and resilience as our graduates make their way into the world!

One of the best ways to begin sharing these stories is by inviting family and friends to the graduation ceremony and having some sort of celebration event post-graduation, whether it’s a dinner, cookout, or party.

Certainly, some of us grow up with more advantages than others, but all of us struggle, all of us feel obstacles sometimes, and all of us must work to affirm who we are, what we believe, and what we want for ourselves and others. In those times when we affirm and overcome, we must celebrate!
